James Boggs

James E. “Jim” Boggs, 77, widower of Kay Batson Boggs, of Chesapeake, passed away Saturday morning, July 26, 2014, at the Community Hospice Care Center following a brief illness.

Jim was born June 29, 1937, in Huntington, W.Va., a son of the late Henry Clay and Mary Ann Booth Boggs.

Jim proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy, and after 20 years of service, retired as a chief petty officer. He then started his own business, B&B Roofing and Sheet Metal. Jim was a member of American Legion Post 16 in Huntington; he became a member of the Masonic Lodge while stationed with the U.S. Navy in the Philippines, BIK-NATO No. 7 Manilla, Philippines, Equality Consistory Scottish Rite Mason and a Past Potentate of El Hasa Shrine, where he was a past president of the patrol unit and served as treasurer of uniform units, member of the Director’s Staff, the Clown Unit, the Oriental Band, the Motor Corps, the Hillbillies, the Legion of Honor and the Greenup County Shrine Club, the Million Dollar Club.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death in 2009 by his loving wife of 51 years, Kay Boggs. Also preceding him in death are four brothers, Tom, Bill, George and Johnny Boggs; and three sisters, Garnett, Betty and Francis.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, James Todd Boggs and his wife, Sue Ann of Ironton; and two grandsons, Wyatt And Justin; along with a host of extended family and friends.

A celebration of life and gathering of friends will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Caniff Funeral Home. Masonic services will be conducted at 7:30. Funeral service will begin at 8 p.m.

Marvin Layne

Marvin Leon Layne, 65, of South Point, died Friday, July 25, 2014, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, Huntington, W.Va. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Cumpston Layne. A viewing will be from noon-1:30 p.m. Tuesday with the funeral service to immediately follow. All services will be conducted at the Full Gospel Assembly Church, 2101 10th Ave., Huntington.
