Lorita Hamilton

Lorita Hamilton, 69, of Ironton, passed away Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, Ashland, Ky. She was born Dec. 8, 1944, in Grayson, Ky., daughter of the late Raymond, Sr. and Catherine Gilbert Dickison Hamilton.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother Robert “Bob” Hamilton. She is survived by two sons, Duane R. Nicely and Darryl A. Nicely; two grandchildren, Tiffany Nicely and Justin Adkins; one brother, Raymond Gilbert Hamilton, Jr; and one sister, Mary Dipalo.

Funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville by Chaplain Sandy Adams. Burial will follow in Old Grayson Cemetery, Grayson, Ky. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Dr. Jain and the staff of Bellefonte Cancer Center, Ashland. Buford Houck

Buford “Ben” F. Houck, 87, of Ironton, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014, at his residence. The Gallia County native was born Dec. 13, 1926, a son of the late Mason F. and Verna Wallace Houck. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty J. Mayes Houck, whom he married Jan. 15, 1949, in Gallipolis.

Mr. Houck was a 1943 graduate of Mercerville High School and a U.S. Army Air Force veteran. He was a licensed insurance agent for Business Men Assurance for 44 + years, retiring in 1991. He attended the Linnville Baptist Church, a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the VFW Post 8850.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Shively; three brothers, Wallace Houck, Gradon Houck and Wendall Houck; and a sister, Beulah Mitchell.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Brent (Barbara) Houck of Ironton; a brother, Noah Houck of Gallipolis; three grandchildren, Keri Taulbee, Douglas Shively and Todd Shively; and a great grandchild, Benjamin Shively

Funeral services will be noon Friday at Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Triplett officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery with military graveside rites by the VFW Post 8850. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home. John Alfrey

John Emerson Alfrey, 81, of Ironton, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Aug. 5, 2014. He was born on March 7, 1933, in Leatherwood. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Fondalene Dodson Alfrey; daughter, Stephanie Burgess of South Point; daughter, Melanie (Larry) Franz of Ironton; and son, Eric (Martha) Alfrey of Columbia, S.C.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Phillip (Carol) Alfrey of Ironton. He was the son of the late Emmett and Oma McGuire Alfrey. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Roger (Mary Ann) Alfrey, sister, Ruth (Larry) Jewell, sister, Deloris Ann Alfrey, and infant sister, Cassandra Sue Alfrey.

He was a member of Gateway Baptist Church in Ironton and was active in serving the Lord by faithfully conducting worship services at Jo-Lin Health Center for more than 40 years. He also served on the board of the Lawrence County Historical Society and was a Kentucky Colonel. He was a 1950 graduate of Dawson-Bryant High School and received a B.S. in business administration from Marshall University. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army with service in the Korean War. He was formerly employed by Wilson Sporting Goods of Ironton, Marquette Cement Company and the Black Powder Trading Company of Rio Grande. In 2005 he returned to Camp Red Cloud in Korea and traveled to the Great Wall in Beijing before visiting family in Kunming, China. In October 2013 he traveled with the Honor Flight to Washington D.C.

The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home and 11 a.m. until service of time Saturday. Funeral services will be noon Saturday at Gateway Baptist Church in Ironton, with pastor Scott Jenkins and Eric Alfrey officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery with military graveside rites by the James Dickey Post 23. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Hospice, 2025 S. Joan Vagnier

Joan Hope Vagnier, 87, of Westerville, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014, at Heartland of Westerville. She is survived by her husband Jeffrey Brown. Arrangements are pending at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville.
