Hornets win ICC golf invitational

PINE GROVE — The Coal Grove Hornets got a big team performance in the first big golf tournament of the season.

Coal Grove shot a 319-team score to win the nine-team Ironton Country Club Invitational by 25 strokes over runner-up Portsmouth.

Brent Morgan led Coal Grove as he took medalist honors with a 70. He also led the all-tournament that included Chesapeake’s Derek Lemley and Portsmouth’s Brandon Jones and Trent Rodbell.

Besides Morgan, Trevor Deere and Brandon Adkins each shot an 80 while Chase McKnight had an 86 to complete the Hornets’ team scoring.

West Union was third with a 353 score followed by Chesapeake at 363, Ironton 383, North Adams 398, Fairland 414, Rock Hill 431 and Ironton St. Joseph 473.

Lemley had a 76 to pace Chesapeake. Jake Stevens shot an 84, Justin Black 98 and Jacob Henson 105 for the Panthers.

Jaylen Thornhill carded an 82 to lead the Fighting Tigers. Cory Rawlins and Mitchell Weisgarber each had a 98 for Ironton and Mason Slagel a 105.

Fairland was topped by Hayden James with an 84. Blake Kerstetter shot a 95, Cameron Sheppard 104 and Eli Brown 131.

Logan Reed’s 89 led Rock Hill while Logan Barcus had a 101, Jason Haywood 109 and Chase Nelson 132.

Bryson Adkins shot an 87 for the Flyers. James Carter was next with a 118 for St. Joseph followed by Seth Kelley with a 133 and Kaitlin Thompson had a 135.

Jones had a 76 and Rodbell 78 to top Portsmouth. Austin Jones and Hayden Harch had 94 and 96, respectively.

For West Union, Craig Horton shot an 82, Brandon Daniels 88, Elijah McCarty 90 and Tyler Fowler 94.

Noah Lung paced North Adams with a 92. Pat England was two shots back, Braxton McFarland had a 100 and Bryant Lung 112.
