Gerald Wilds

Gerald “Jack” Wilds, 90, of Dayton, passed away Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014, at the VA Medical Center in Dayton. The Ironton native was born Oct. 17, 1923, a son to the late John and Pearl Hall Wilds.

Jack was a graduate of Pedro High School in Pedro. He was a retired quality control specialist for the U.S. Department of Defense in Dayton. Jack served as a former U.S. Army Air Corps veteran during World War II in the following divisions: 10th Air Force, 1337th Air Transport Command and the 308th Bomb Squadron serving in the China, Burma and India campaign. During World War II he was based out of the Hsinghing/Karachi American Air Bases, India. He flew in B-17s, B-24 Liberators and B-25s during this time. Their assignments were to fly supplies from the Assam Valley over the “Hump” to Southeastern China. During their last flight their B-24 Liberator crashed where he and the other remaining survivors were helped and protected by the Chinese villagers until they could be later rescued by U.S. forces. He was then transferred to a Maryland hospital and finally transported to Camp Atterbury Hospital in Indiana, where later he was discharged from service.

Jack was awarded several decorations and citations for his services including the Presidential Unit Citation, World War II Victory Ribbon, Asiatic Theater Ribbon and two Bronze Stars with Oak Leaf Clusters. Jack was also a lifelong member of DAV Chapter 9, American Legion Post 431 and AmVets Post 24. He was also a member of the Military Order of the Cooties Pup Tent 12, Wright Pat Quarter Century Club, Hump Pilots Association and B-24 Liberator Club, all in Dayton. As well, Jack belonged to the Eagles FOE 895 and VFW 8850 of Ironton.

Jack was a devoted fan of baseball in which he coached and umpired for many years in the West Carrollton Little League Baseball Association. Even with his many outside activities he always loved and found time for his family, especially his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren!

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Ida Moore, Dorothy Wilds, Betty Kiser, Freda Wilds and Hazel Wilds; brothers, Walter, John, Joseph, Arthur and Pearl June Wilds; and first wife, Norma Jean Granato.

He is survived by brother, Jarvis “Micky” Wilds, of Ironton; son, Mike (Sabrina) Wilds, of Miamisburg; grandsons, Joshua (Nikki) Wilds, of Harrison and Isaiah Wilds, of Cincinnati; son, Terry (Sandy) Wilds, of Westfield, Ind.; grandchildren, Christopher Wilds, of Westfield, Ind., Robyn (Dean) Wirkerman, of Manhattan, N.Y., and Lori (Mark) Churchill, of Milan, Ill; great-grandchildren, Ben, Beth, Anna, and John Churchill; along with many other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home with the Rev. Bruce Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Helen Milem

Helen Gibson Milem, 97, of South Point, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2014, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, W.Va. There will be a private graveside service Friday at Highland Memorial Gardens in South Point. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.schneidergriffin.com.

 

Clyde Noble

Ret. Chief Master Sergeant (USAF) Clyde Noble, 81, of South Point, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, in Veterans Administration Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va. There will be a memorial service to honor Clyde’s life and service at 466 Township Road 156 in Chesapeake on Saturday with pastor D.L. Webb officiating. Alda McLellon

Alda Fern McLellon, 89, passed away Aug. 19, 2014. Beloved wife to Allan for 68 years; loving mother of Mark McLellon (Judy); sister of Zilpha (Curt). Dear grandma of Jeremy, Jennifer, Chris (Laurie) and Beth Eskew (Jack); and great-grandma of Alyssa and Caelan McLellon and Jocelyn Eskew.

Alda will greatly miss her companions Molly, Calvin and Hobbs. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until the funeral service at noon on Friday at Jardine Funeral Home, 15822 Pearl Road in Strongsville. Maririta Bartee

Maririta Bartee, 74, of West Point, Ky., formerly of Clarksville, Ind., and Ironton, passed away Thursday, Aug 14, 2014. She was born May 22, 1940, in Ironton, the daughter of the late George and Mary Elizabeth (Mains) Holtzapfel. She is survived by two daughters, Kathy Martin (Joe), of Ironton, and Terri Baker (Steve), of West Point, Ky.; and a brother, George (Bert) Holtzapfel (Mary Jon), of Ironton.

There will be an 11 a.m. graveside service on Saturday at Calvary Cemetery in Ironton with visitation from 9-10:30 a.m. on Saturday at O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home in Ironton prior to graveside service with the Rev. David Huffman officiating.

 

 

Edna Massie

Edna Marie Massie, 72, of Franklin Furnace, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, at St. Mary’s Medical Center Ironton Campus.
