Campbell Chapel having food giveaway

Beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday Lawrence County residents who provide ID and proof of residency can get free food at Campbell Chapel in Ironton.

The event is spearheaded by Backpack Buddies coordinator Jodi Hunt and features presorted boxes of food purchased from the Huntington Area Food Bank. Various types of produce, cakes, breads, dry goods, canned food and baby food will be available.

“Everybody who shows up will hopefully get to go through one time,” Hunt said. “Once everyone has gone through then our volunteers will go through once. After that, people can go through again until all the food has been given away.”

What each person is given is based on that particular family’s need, Hunt said, and the presorted food will already be bagged.

Hunt said all total Saturday’s event marks the sixth time the church has recently given away food.

“It may be only the second or third time we’ve given food away at the church,” she said. “We did the same twice over the summer and several times as a mobile pantry at places like Sherman Thompson towers.”
