PIKETON — It was a game of firsts for the Chesapeake Panthers soccer team.

The Panthers won their first game of the season for the first time in the brief history of the program as they beat the Piketon Red Streaks 5-1 on Wednesday.

“More importantly than the score, we have seven players who took shots on goal this evening. That is progress that we needed to see at Chesapeake,” said Panthers’ coach Steve McCloud.

“Combine that with a relatively young but stingy defense and we are headed in the right direction.”

After Piketon jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead at the 11:47 mark, Chesapeake answered less than a minute later on an unassisted goal by Wesley Stephens to tie the game.

The Panthers took the lead for good on a goal by Jacob Martin with an assist from Stephens.

In the second half, Logan McCloud scored a goal with an assist from Kent Picklesimer and then the duo reversed roles on the next goal and it was 4-1.

McCloud’s unassisted goal with 3:29 left off a pass from Stephens capped the scoring.

Chesapeake hosts Greenup County, Ky., at 5 p.m. Saturday.
