WHEELERSBURG — The St. Joseph Female Flyers seem to start slowly offensively and finish strong.

But their defense never seems to change.

St. Joseph led just 1-0 at the half but turned up their offense in the second half en route to a 5-0 shutout of the Wheelersburg Lady Pirates on Tuesday.

“Wheelersburg has a strong team with a good defense that doesn’t give you any time on the ball,” said Female Flyers’ coach Kyle Weatherholt.

“Once we settled into the game and got a little more patient, we started to pick the right passes and get better touches.”

Lynsey Booker made a good run across the back of the defense and scored off a pass from Emma Saxby to give St. Joseph its 1-0 lead in the first half.

Sidney Payne then scored 18 minutes into the second half with an assist from Hayley Bartram to get the offense rolling.

Booker and Saxby teamed up for another goal, Payne scored an unassisted goal and Kaylee Sheridan’s goal off an assist from Ashley Bartram capped the scoring.

“In the second half we started playing our game and keeping the ball more,” said Weatherholt.

“Wheelersburg had some quick forwards who put some pressure on our back line. Our defense was well organized today and bent at times but never broke.”

St. Joseph hosts Fairland at 11 a.m. Saturday.
