CHESAPEAKE — Forget good manners and sharing. The Chesapeake Panthers like the idea of being a little stingy.

Chesapeake (3-2) limited Warren to 187 total yards including 101 on the ground as they beat the Warren Warriors 10-7 Friday for the Panthers third straight win.

“No question our defense was the difference. We did a good job. Our guys did their jobs and did things right fundamentally,” said Panthers’ coach Andy Clark.

“We got some heat on the quarterback and that helped out our pass coverage. He’s athletic and we were able to hurry his throws.”

A big defensive series came in the final minute of the game.

Warren (1-4) blocked a punt and had the ball in Panther territory. The Warriors converted a fourth-and-10 with 35 seconds left to the Chesapeake 30.

Unable to move the ball, Warren attempted a field goal but a bad snap forced the holder to run and the Panthers made the stop.

Brad Meadows led the Panthers’ defense with 17 tackles. Nate Smith intercepted two passes and had three pass breakups.

Austin Carpenter blocked a field goal in the third quarter. Dakota Clark three sacks and nine tackles — one for a loss — and Jacob Johnson had one and a half tackles for a loss.

The defense produced the first Chesapeake score when Cecil Fletcher blocked a punt and returned it 16 yards for the touchdown in the first quarter.

Wesley Stephens kicked the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

Warren tied the game on a 4-yard run by Jared Isner with 7:47 left in the half.

But the Panthers regained the lead on a 30-yard field goal by Stephens with 3:02 to play in the half.

The Panthers were hurt by 10 penalties for 62 yards.

“Offensively we couldn’t get any drives established because we shot ourselves in the foot too often,” said Clark.

Chesapeake got to the 4-yard line but turned the ball over on a fumble.

The Panthers were led by Casey McComas who ran 13 ties for 88 yards.
