Household Hazardous Waste disposal event totals released

The statistics for the Lawrence-Scioto County Solid Waste Management District’s 2014 Household Hazardous Waste Collection are as follows:

Nearly 180 vehicles came through Dow Chemical; 70 pounds of batteries; 300 tires; 500 pounds of flammable aerosols, 11,000 pounds of paint-related materials; 1,600 pounds of oil; 25,000 pounds of latex paint; six pounds of propane tanks; 10 pounds of fire extinguishers; 2,000 pounds of flammable liquids; 1,200 pounds of toxic solids; 1,000 pounds of toxic liquids; 400 pounds of acidic corrosive liquid; 1,000 pounds of basic corrosive liquid; 2,000 pounds of non-regulated electrical equipment; 455 pounds of environmentally hazardous substances; 22 pounds of alkaline batteries; 45 pounds of fluorescent bulbs; 69 pounds of pharmaceuticals (pills, etc.); and 15 pounds of asbestos tiles.

The communities in Scioto County that took the most advantage of the event were Wheelersburg, Portsmouth and Franklin Furnace. The Lawrence County communities of Ironton and Proctorville had the most participants.

Participants were surveyed and an overwhelming number – 110 of 177 – heard about the event from ads and articles in the local newspaper.
