WESTWOOD, Ky. — Just when the St. Joseph Flyers appeared to be on their way to a win, an ugly two-headed monster reared its head.

Turnovers and fouls in the final quarter proved costly as the Fairview Eagles rallied to beat the Flyers 58-56 on Friday.

The comeback actually began in the third quarter. St. Joseph (1-3) led by 17 points when Fairview went on an 11-0 run to including a pair of 3-pointers by Antwan Washington and the Flyers’ lead was 44-38.

The Eagles’ comeback was fueled when Flyers’ point guard Wulf Goheen was whistled for his fifth foul midway through the fourth quarter.

Fairview’s press then forced 10 turnovers including one with 27 seconds left that led to an intentional foul and Jonathan Ruggles hit a free throw to put the Eagles up 57-56.

The Flyers turned the ball over again and Washington was fouled with 12 seconds to play. He hit one of the two shots for a two-point lead and Troy Scott’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer fell short.

Scott led the Flyers with 21 points and Goheen had 12 points. Chris Lewis and Zac McGraw grabbed six rebounds while Trey Young had four.

Washington led Fairview (5-2) with 22 points. Dylan Romine had 15 points and 10 rebounds while Alex Roy finished with 15 points and nine rebounds.

The Flyers trailed 13-12 at the end of the first quarter but rallied to lead 24-21 at the break.

The Flyers scored 10 unanswered points to begin the second half before things began to break down.

St. Joseph plays Sciotoville East at 12:30 p.m. on Monday in the annual Ironton Classic.
