COAL GROVE — While the offense was sharing, the defense was stingy.

The Coal Grove Hornets used a balanced offense and a tough defense to beat the Rock Hill Redmen 60-34 on Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Brandon Adkins scored 11 points and Joe Akers had 10 points as nine different Hornets scored. Austen Pleasants, Travis Carey and Jordan Lucas all had 8 points each and Sean Paulus added 6 points on a pair of 3-pointers.

Austin Collins had 18 points for the Redmen who had only five players score.

Akers scored 6 points in the first quarter while Paulus and Lucas hit 3-pointers to give the Hornets (4-5, 1-3) a 14-6 lead.

Austin Barcus scored 4 points for Rock Hill (2-7, 0-4).

Carey scored 4 points while Jonathan Joseph, Isaiah Gunther and Adkins all hit from behind the arc to give the Hornets a 29-15 halftime lead. Collins scored 6 points for the Redmen.

Coal Grove extended its lead to 43-25 after three quarters as Adkins and Carey combined for 9 points. Collins scored 8 of Rock Hill’s 10 points in the quarter.

Pleasants had 6 points and Lucas was 5 of 6 from the foul line in the fourth quarter as Coal Grove continued to pull away.

On Tuesday, Coal Grove hosts Chesapeake and Rock Hill visits Portsmouth.
