PORTSMOUTH — In an effort to guide teachers on the basis of early childhood development, behavior support, and young learning guidelines, Shawnee State University will host its annual Fabulous Friday Conference on Friday, April 17 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the University Center.

The event’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Maria Sargent, professor of Early Childhood Education at Ashland University. Dr. Sargent has been active for over 25 years in general education, special education, behavior intervention, brain research, and arts intervention. Her keynote presentation will discuss brain research and how it can be used to enhance an individual’s overall teaching skills.

During her career, Sargent has led the way in several major projects, which include multiple million dollar grants designed to enhance education outcomes for children at risk and has worked with various state departments (including education and mental health) to develop guidelines for professionals wishing to improve outcomes for students and their families. Additionally, Sargent has also served as a consultant for numerous dance programs, which includes “Reach Out and Dance,” “SPARCS,” and Rosie O’Donnell’s original “Broadway Kids” program in New York.
