Chesapeake rolls past Portsmouth

CHESAPEAKE — That’s why you get three outs.

Chesapeake scored eight runs after two outs as the Panthers beat the Portsmouth Trojans 11-1 in five innings on Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Blake Lester got the win with a two-hitter. He struck out seven and walked two.

The Panthers (1-1, 1-0) had nine hits with Casey McComas going 2-4 with three runs batted in. Nate Smith was 2-3 and Blake Ashworth 2-2.

Portsmouth got its run in the top of the first inning on a two-out walk to Sky Oliver and Hunter Gibson’s RBI double.

Ryan Williams had Portsmouth other hit.

The Panthers tied the game in the bottom of the inning when McComas reached on an error, stole second moved up on an error and scored on a passed ball.

Chesapeake got three runs in the second after two outs.

Jacob Eddy was safe on an error, Ashworth and Kolton Webb singled for a run, McComas was safe on an error as a run scored and Smith singled in a run.

The lead went to 6-1 in the fourth.

Ashworth singled, courtesy runner Kelton Jones stole second, McComas singled and Smith hit a sacrifice fly. McComas scored on a passed ball.

The Panthers ended the game with a two-out, five-run fifth inning.

Bobby Arthur singled and pinch-runner Wes Malavenda moved up on when Eddy reached on an error.

Ashworth was hit by a pitch and Webb and McComas both had two-run singles. Smith singled and an outfield error allowed the final run to score.

The Panthers visit Symmes Valley on Wednesday.
