This year’s diabetes awareness community health fair put on by the Ironton Lions Club will be from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday at the Ironton city building.

“The Lions Club is all about vision and eiabetes affects vision,” Laura Brown, club president, said. “The health fair will provide education and background on diabetes and help people understand more about it as well as prediabetes.”

Free screenings, safety and security tips, and doctors will be available at the health fair.

“Some years have been well attended and some haven’t. We’ve tried different locations and different days in the past,” Brown said. “Those that attend can walk in and go from booth to booth getting resources, educational information and recipes for type 2 diabetes.”

Participants for the health fair include Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, Dr. Basedow and staff, Central Ohio Diabetes Association, Area Aging Agency 7, Genesis, Care Source, Lawrence County Sherriff’s Office, Blessed at Home, Ironton City Health Department, Lawrence County Health Department, Appalachian Translation Research Network (OSU) and Dr. Derek DuFore-DC, DABCA.

Brown said next year the hope is to have a 5K as part of the health fair, and in order to do that, the Ironton Lions Club will be hosting a spring yard sale on Saturday, May 2 at the historic State Route 75 tunnel at 7 a.m.

“We are budgeted a certain amount each year for the health fair, but we want to do a 5K for it next year too,” Brown said. “The yard sale will help us raise the money to be able to do the 5K next year. Everything that we raise will go straight to the 5K and diabetes health fair next year.”

The club is asking community members to donate any unwanted, clean and gently used items such as tools, clothing, housewares and furniture. Donated items can be brought right to the sale, or Lions Club member Tony Howard will come and pick them up.

Those wishing to donate items to the Lions Club for the sale and would like for them to be picked up can contact Howard at 740-532-1107 to schedule a pickup time.
