B-C’s Alvelo dominates Lady Pirates in 5 innings

AKRON — Now that’s what you can an ace pitcher.

Bloom-Carroll’s Taran Alvelo struck out 11 batters in five innings and allowed only one baserunner on a bunt single in a 10-0 win over the Wheelersburg Lady Pirates in the Division III state semifinals on Thursday.

The only Wheelersburg baserunner came when Kirsten Nolfi beat out a bunt single down the first base line with two outs in the third inning.

Alvelo — a freshman — struck out 368 batters this season to tie for 17th place in Ohio High School Athletic Association history. She has two perfect games.

McKenna Coffman was 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and three runs batted in for Bloom-Carroll (27-4).

Kaylee Springer was 3-3 with a double and two RBIs and Nicole Goodman 2-3 with three RBIs.

Wheelersburg finished 25-2.

Bloom-Carroll plays Warren Champion at 10 a.m. Saturday in the state title game. Warren Champion beat Richwood North Union 6-3.
