PEDRO — So what does 7-year-old Gage Scherer like best about racing ATVs?

“I like to win,” said Scherer.

Winning is an understatement for the younger driver who wrapped up the 2015 AMA ATV national championship three weeks ago.

Scherer won the first race of the season in the 10-race series and his first question was, “How many more do I have to win to get the No. 1 plate?”

As it turned out, Scherer has won six of the eight races in which he has participated. Drivers are permitted to miss three total races.

Scherer has 205 points out of a possible 210 in the 4-6 age division of the 50 semi-stock class. It is only his second year competing in the ATV series. He was second last year so winning was the only option in Scherer’s mind this season.

“It feels good,” he said.

The final race of the season will be next weekend at the Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, TN.

Scherer also races 50 CDT for ages 6-8 and he currently is fourth. There is one race remaining.

ATV like any racing is an expensive sport. Scherer has been fortunate to have quality sponsors Koster Racing, G-Force and Fly Racing.

Stacy Scherer, Gage’s mother, said cash sponsors are Williams Electrical, Mannon Pipeline, BM Trucking, Greene Auto Sales, Tri-State Bone & Joint Center, Freddie Hayes and Les Boggs, and grandparents Butch and Rita Conley.

Stacy said the cash sponsors “helped a lot this year.”
