Sharing stories of breast cancer

ASHLAND, Ky. – During October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, there are stories of those who have survived breast cancer; share the burdens of those in the fight; join with families and friends who have been touched by the disease; and draw inspiration from those whose lives were too soon lost.

These stories have power. Through them others are inspired to think about prevention; to act for early detection; and to be advocates for screening. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the community is encouraged to THINK, ACT and BE pink.

King’s Daughters Silhouettes of Courage project provides a forum for women and families to share their breast cancer stories and to encourage others who are fighting the disease, have survived it, or who have lost someone to it.

A Silhouettes of Courage signing event will be at the Ashland Town Center from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, near the JC Penney entrance. If you have a story about breast cancer — either as a patient, survivor or family/friend of someone who is — you are invited to write your story on one of the life-size silhouettes for others to read.

The Silhouettes of Courage program is sponsored by King’s Daughters Health Foundation. A special thank you to the Columbus affiliate of Susan G. Komen for allowing KDMC to adapt their original idea.

On Thursday, Oct. 1, King’s Daughters will unveil all of the silhouettes at a special Breast Cancer Awareness event under the tent at the 24th and Central Avenue parking lot at King’s Daughters.
