Hornets’ Gillette advances to D2 district golf tourney

Alex Gillette is still swinging.

The Coal Grove Hornets’ sophomore golfer finished among the top three individuals as she qualified for the Division II district golf tournament.

The top three teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the district tournament.

Gillette shot rounds of 48 and 49 for her 97 total at the Hocking Hills Golf Course in Logan. She advances to the district next Tuesday at the Upper Landsdown Golf Club in Ashville.

The other two individual qualifiers were Alana DeLancey with a 93 and Madalynn Roby with a 97. Both are from Belpre.

Waterford won the team title with a 375 score. Reedsville Eastern was next at 418 followed by Logan Elm at 426, Circleville 438, Meigs 484, Wellston 555 and Jackson 585.

McKenzie Dietz of Waterford had an 83 to take medalist honors.

In the Division II sectional at the Chillicothe Jaycees Course, Ironton freshman Tyler Shelton had rounds of 60 and 56 for a 116 total and was 20th in the field of 49.

Veronica Olaker of Greenfield McClain and Alexandra Clark of West Union shared medalist honors as each shot a 94.

West Union had a 418 to win the sectional with Westfall second at 435 and North Adams third with a 439 total.

Miami Trace had 468, McClain 473, Eastern Brown 477, Faifield 489 and Lynchburg-Clay 579.
