Deere, Lemley earn trips to D3 state golf tournament

McDERMOTT — They’re quite a pair.

A couple of local golfers are head for the Division III state tournament after qualifying as individuals at the district tournament on Monday.

Coal Grove Hornets’ sophomore Trevor Deere and Chesapeake Panthers’ junior Derek Lemley finished second and third overall to earn their trip to the state tournament to be held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16-17, at the Ohio State University Scarlet Course.

The top two teams and two individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the state tournament.

Deere posted rounds of 35 and 43 to post a 78 total to finish three shots behind Cameron Bosner of Waterford who had a 75 for medalist honors.

Lemley — who is making his second straight trip to the state tournament — finished third overall with a 79 on rounds of 38 and 41.

Chesapeake was third overall as a team with a 359 total.

Austin Hutchison finished with a 92 on rounds of 49-43, Justin Black 46-48 for 94, Kobe McWhorter 49-45 for a 94, and Liam Thacker 52-53 for 105.

Coal Grove was ninth overall with a 390 score.

Ryan Malone had a 90 on rounds of 39-51, Ethan Wilson 53-56 for 109, Jed Whitworth had a 117 on a 51-66, and Jacob Mathes a 113 on a 54-59.

The top two teams were Waterford with a 324 total and West Union had a 347.
