Gillette gets trip to state golf match

ASHVILLE — Alex Gillette is making her first trip to the state golf tournament and she’s doing it in style.

The Coal Grove Lady Hornets’ sophomore golfer not only qualified for the Division II state tournament but took medalist honors in the process.

At Tuesday’s Division II district tournament on the Upper Landsdowne Golf Course, Gillette fired a 78 on rounds of 36 and 42, seven strokes ahead of runner-up McKenzie Dietz of Waterford.

The top team and top individual advance to the state tournament that will be held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16-17, on the Ohio State University Gray Course.

Waterford was the team champion with a 378 total.

The Hornets’ Trevor Deere will play in the state tournament on the Scarlett Course Oct. 16-17.
