NEW BOSTON — There are a couple of facets of the game that coach Alvin Carpenter has been stressing.

It’s working.

The Symmes Valley Lady Vikings showed improvement in two areas as they beat the New Boston Lady Tigers 57-55 on Thursday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

“It was one of our better games. The last two games we’ve played pretty good defense and our shot selection has been better for the most part,” said Carpenter.

Jensyn Shepherd had 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Vikings (9-7, 8-2). Breanna Brumfield added 10 points, four assists and five steals while Kaitlyn Payne had seven rebounds and four assists with Caitlyn Crabtree grabbing seven rebounds.

Ali Hamilton scored 19 points and Mariah Buckley 12 for New Boston (7-7, 5-5).

Shepherd scored 8 points in the first quarter as Symmes Valley took a 13-11 lead. Kaylee Stone scored 6 of her 8 points.

Hamilton scored 8 points in the second quarter as New Boston got within 26-25.

The Lady Vikings (9-7, 8-2) pulled away to a 38-31 after three quarters as Sierra Ross scored all 5 of her points.

Shepherd scored 8 points in the fourth quarter to offset 10 points by Hamilton as the Lady Vikings held on for the win.

Symmes Valley visits first-place Portsmouth Notre Dame next Thursday in a must-win game.
