Club working for students

Six hundred divided by 30 is an equation that adds up to a couple of hard day’s work. Starting today and continuing onto Wednesday the 30 members of Ironton’s Child Welfare Club will make their signature chicken and cranberry salads, plus assorted other salads to be distributed on Thursday.

This is a much look forward to event each year for the Ironton community.

It is also a prominent fundraiser for an organization whose roots go back to the 1930s. That’s when a group of women could see the tragic circumstances of some Ironton children hit hard by the Depression. They formed the club to alleviate some of that suffering.

Today children remain the focus of the club and the annual spring luncheon is one of the ways its raises money for its many worthwhile projects. This one event will bring in between $3,000 to $4,000.

That money will go toward the EDDY test, which awards the top sixth graders in Ironton and St. Lawrence schools. It gives those children the chance to experience the kind of test they will have to take to get into college.

The club also awards the top freshmen at Ironton High and St. Joseph.

There is also a scholarship for non-traditional woman student at Ohio University Southern, contributions made to domestic violence shelter, Backpack Buddies program and the list goes on.

For an organization to remain after almost 90 years is remarkable. That is actively retains its mission is a great credit to its members.

We salute the Child Welfare Club.
