Volunteers add much to city

As the weather warms and thoughts go to spring and summer, Ironton residents are fortunate to have several organizations that will provide much during those seasons.

One of those is Ironton In Bloom who provides flowers that will be in bloom all over downtown Ironton.

For about four years this all-volunteer organization has spent countless hours planting large decorative pots, hanging baskets and planting bulbs to beautify where we live.

To do this, the organization relies heavily on fundraising to pay the bills for these flowers, which can cost the group upwards to $40,000. One of those events is coming up next month when the organization is sponsoring a bus trip to Cincinnati to see the world-famous Cincinnati flower show and then off to Jungle Jim’s, a destination supermarket. Deadline for signing up for the trip is Friday.

In recent years, Ironton In Bloom has kept the beauty going as long as it can with fall and Christmas decorations with the help of several individuals and other entities within the community.

Warm days also mean on Fridays and Saturdays the Ironton Farmers Market will open with fresh homegrown produce, baked goods, fresh eggs, crafts and homemade breads. It is also a chance to fellowship.

Ironton is fortunate that there are volunteer groups willing to give up time and energy to provide these amenities. They provide a special service to our community and look to add to our quality of life.
