COAL GROVE — Just call him Sean McFanned.

Rock Hill senior pitcher Sean McFann fanned 10 batters over six innings and walked just one as the Redmen edged the Coal Grove Hornets 3-1 on Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“Sean kept them off-balance and we played pretty good defense,” said Redmen coach Barry Litteral.

Both teams had just four hits and scratched out runs in the game dominated by pitching.

“We hit the ball in the first inning but didn’t have anything to show for it. After that, McFann did a good job. He shut us down,” said Hornets’ coach Dean Mader.

Rock Hill (4-0, 1-0) took a 1-0 led in the first inning as Heath Carpenter walked, McFann reached on an error, Brandon Schob singled to load the bases and Carpenter stole home.

The lead went to 2-0 in the fourth when Kyle Stanfield walked, stole second and came home on a pair of passed balls.

Coal Grove (1-1, 0-1) got its run in the fifth. Chase McKnight singled and went to second on an outfield error and Jacob Clark followed with a hit.

Rock Hill added an insurance run in the seventh.

Trae Crabtree singled, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on McFann’s squeeze bunt.

On Monday, Rock Hill is at Chesapeake and Coal Grove visits Portsmouth.
