ROME TOWNSHIP — A different take on popular fairy tales will come to Fairland High School this weekend.

Students at the school will perform “Into the Woods Jr,” based on the book by James Lapine and featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

The musical, which mixes the plots of multiple fairy tales, such as Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood and Jack and the Beanstalk, was adapted into a 2014 feature film.

Chris Shue, the school’s music teacher and director of the production, said 42 students, who passed auditions, will take part in the performance.

“We brought in outside judges,” Shue said, of the casting process.

The Tony Award-winning musical follows a baker and his wife who learn they have been cursed with childlessness by a witch next door.  The couple goes on a quest, swindling and stealing from such already-victimized fairy tale characters to get objects required to break the spell.  However, there is no “happily ever after” ending, as each character must now face the consequences of his or her decision.

The production is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.

“From the first rehearsal the students have collaborated on gaining a new perspective on these fairy tales and the ethical issues these stories present,” MTI Freddie Gershon said in a statement. “We think they deserve a standing ovation from the community for all their work.”

Performances are set for 7 p.m. Friday, 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in the Fairland High cafetorium.  Tickets are $6 and are available at the door.
