PORTSMOUTH — This time the offense took a back seat to the pitching and it proved to be a nice ride.

Aley Carmon scattered eight hits as the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers got past the Portsmouth Lady Trojans 4-2 on Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Carmon struck out five and walked two in going the distance.

Andi Queen pitched well for Portsmouth as she allowed eight hits, struck out seven and walked one.

Ironton jumped in front 2-0 in the first inning.

With one out, Kylie Barcus walked and went to third when Kenzie Cremeens reached on an error. Carmon was safe on an error for a run and Cremeens scored when Ruthie Paholsky grounded out.

Ironton got what proved to be the winning run in the fifth.

Zjaytayia Mize and Haylee Stevens singled to start the inning. Mize came around to score as Barcus and Cremeens grounded out.

Ironton added an insurance run in the sixth on a single by Brooke Elswick and a two-out double by Mize.

Portsmouth avoided the shutout with two outs in the seventh.

Sharia Kearns and Baleigh Bradley doubled for a run and Bailey Horsley had an RBI single before Carmon struck out the next batter to end the game.

Mize went 2-3 with an RBI and Paholsky was 2-4 with an RBI.

Horsley was 2-3 with an RBI for Portsmouth.

Ironton travels to Gallipolis on Monday.
