Pitching, hitting key to Pointers’ OVC win

SOUTH POINT — Good pitching and good hitting resulted in a good day for the South Point Pointers.

Travis Dillon pitched a five-hitter as the South Point Pointers got 11 hits as they beat the Rock Hill Redmen 11-1 in a six-inning Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.

Dillon struck out three and walked one for the complete game win.

South Point scored a run in the second. Logan Wade singled, Dillon walked and Drew Adams singled.

The lead went to 2-0 in the third when Douglas Shaffer reached on an error, Brycen McCann walked and Wade singled.

In the third, Adams and Shaffer singled, McCann walked and Brandon Layne grounded out to make it 3-0.

The Pointers added a run in the fifth when Jonathan Henline walked, moved up on a ground out, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Adams’ groundout.

The seven-run sixth began with Shaffer, McCann, Layne and Wade all getting singles. Tanner Hall reached on an error, Henline singled, Dillon and Christian Pritchard both reached on errors and Shaffer hand his second hit of the inning.

Rock Hill scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth when Jake Blagg walked and Sean McFann and Brandon Schob singled.

Wade was 3-4, Shaffer 3-5 and Adams 2-4 to lead the Pointers.

McFann was 2-3 for the Redmen.

On Monday, South Point visits Portsmouth and Rock Hill hosts Fairland.
