ROME TOWNSHIP — Two hours into their effort, workers had amassed more than 200 worn-out tires and were loading them into a truck at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds.

It was part of a drop-off day, organized by the Lawrence-Scioto County Solid Waste Management District to help with disposal.

As the crews were working, several trucks rolled in with loads of tires.

“It’s been continuous here,” Dan Palmer, the director of the district said.

The fairgrounds site followed a recent effort at Ironton Hills, in which Palmer said 1,414 tires were collected.

“We applied for and received a grant from the Ohio Environmental Protection agency,” he said. “We got $20,000 for tire and litter clean-up.

Palmer said a number of the crew working were from the Rome Fire Department, organized by Chief George Barnette. The rest were municipal court workers.

Following Friday’s work, he said two drop-off points are planned in Scioto County.

“It’s a great opportunity to get tires off people’s property,” he said. “A lot of people are bringing them in.”

He said the district will be teaming up with the city of Ironton for a citywide clean-up, starting the Tuesday after Labor Day and running through Friday. They will be providing roll-out containers for residents to dispose of unwanted items.
