A burglary suspect was shot and taken for a medical evaluation before he was eventually arrested and charged with burglary by the Ironton Police Department.

The incident occurred at 10:48 p.m. last Thursday in the 1000 block of South Sixth Street.

“The Ironton Police Department responded to a burglary in progress,” Detective Chad Gue, of the Ironton Police Department, said. “After getting there and doing the initial investigation, we found a subject by the name of Eric Collins, who resides at the 700 block of S. Eighth St.”

Gue said the homeowner was working in the garage when he heard something in the house.

“The homeowner found the suspect in the front of the house with items in his hands,” Gue said. “They wrestled in the front before the homeowner shot the suspect in the right leg.”

Gue added that the homeowner was lying on top of Collins to hold him before police arrived.

Collins was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Ironton, where he was medically cleared, before being transported to the jail.

Gue said the department is working with the Lawrence County prosecutor’s office to determine whether charges will be filed on the homeowner.
