SOUTH POINT — Double initials meant double digits.
Leah Lawson scored 16 points and Brooklyn Badgett had 11 points to lead the South Point Lady Pointers to a 62-51 season-opening win over the Lincoln County Lady Panthers on Tuesday.
Madison Kearns had 12 points and Kate Mundy pulled down 11 rebounds to help fuel the Lady Pointers’ win.
“It was a fast-paced game. It was a typical first game of the season. It was pretty sloppy,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Dave Adams.
“I thought we had good balance. We are a young team and we hope to get better every game. We did play hard and I’m really happy with that.”
Another key for the Lady Pointers came at the foul line. South Point converted 21-of-33 attempts while Lincoln County shot just 38 percent from the line (8-of-21).
McKendra Wiley scored 13 points, Carly McComas 11 and Alli Farmer 10 for Lincoln County (0-1).
Kearns scored 7 points in the first quarter including 5-of-5 at the line while Abby Hannah added 5 points to give South Point a 19-12 lead. McComas hit a pair of 3-pointers for the Lady Panthers.
McKendra scored 9 points and Farmer 6 as the Lady Panthers cut the deficit to 32-29 at the break.
Badgett picked up a pair of fouls and sat out most of the second quarter, but she hit a pair of baskets in the third quarter while Emilee Whitt and Hannah each added a triple and the South Point lead was 44-38.
Lawson and Badgett each hit a big 3-pointer and combined for 15 of South Point’s 18 points in the fourth quarter. Lawson was 4-of-4 and Badgett 3-of-4 at the line down the stretch.
The Lady Pointers host South Webster on Saturday with the junior varsity starting at 6 p.m.
