MAYSVILLE, Ky. — This win came with a bonus.
The St. Joseph Female Flyers beat the Whitesville Trinity Lady Raiders 53-40 on Saturday to win the St. Patrick Catholic Classic.
“The girls played pretty well. It was nice to win and nice to win the tournament,” said Female Flyers’ coach Nick Miller.
St. Joseph (2-2) was led by Morgan Turner with a game-high 18 points including two 3-pointers. Ashlee Blankenship added 8 points and 10 rebounds to the win.
Ashley Bartram and Megan Riley had 9 rebounds and Lauren Bush 7.
Nina Wathen scored 13 points for Trinity (3-1).
Kaitlin Sheridan scored 5 of her 7 points in the first quarter and Blankenship added 4 more as St. Joseph took a 20-12 lead.
The Female Flyers managed just 6 points in the second quarter — Turner had 4 of them — and the lead was just 26-20 at the break.
Wathen had 7 points in the third quarter but Riley countered with 6 points and Blankenship had 4 more as the Female Flyers extended the lead to 42-31.
Turner — who sat out much of the third quarter in foul trouble — scored 9 points including a trifecta as St. Joseph outscored the Lady Raiders 11-9 to seal the win.
Turner, Blankenship and Riley were all named all-tournament.
The Female Flyers visit Hannan, W.Va., on Wednesday.
