SOUTH POINT — As the South Point point guard, Brooklyn Badgett is used to having the ball in her hands in key situations.
One of those situations was facing Badgett again on Monday and the Lady Pointers’ senior was up to the challenge.
Badgett hit a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left to lift the Lady Pointers over the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 60-59 in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“We wanted to get the ball inside to (Kate) Mundy and she could shoot it or kick it back out to one of our shooters,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Dave Adams.
“But Brooklyn is a senior and she’s been in tough situations many times. If she gets her feet set, she’s tough and she took the shot and knocked it down.”
Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach said the loss was disappointing but he praised his team.
“In tight games we’re going to have to do a better job taking care of the ball if we want to win,” said Roach.
“I was proud of our effort. I felt that we did a good job denying the 3-point shot until the third quarter. Compliment played a stellar game offensively and Crum was a great asset to our scoring tonight.”
South Point (3-0, 1-0) had four players in double figures led by Mundy with 14 points.
Badgett had 12 points while Leah Lawson and Emilee Whitt had 10 each.
Coal Grove (2-1, 0-1) was paced by Emily Compliment with a game-high 23 points. Lauren Crum scored 18 points and Destiny Dolen had 11.
Compliment scored 8 points in the first quarter as Coal Grove took a 10-8 lead.
Crum and Dolen each hit 3-pointers and Crum, Compliment and Kasey Murphy combined for 13 points to help open up a 29-19 lead.
Badgett had 7 points including a triple to keep South Point within striking distance.
The Lady Pointers came out strong in the third quarter as Whitt and Lawson each hit a pair of 3-pointers and Mundy had 5 points as South Point outscored Coal Grove 20-13 to cut the deficit to 42-39.
Crum scored 10 points in the fourth quarter including 4-of-4 at the foul line. Compliment was 3-of-4 from the line but South Point continued to connect from the outside.
White and Abby Hannah had 3-point goals, Mundy scored 7 points and Badgett hit her clutch 3-pointer to give South Point the lead.
After a Coal Grove turnover, Badgett was fouled and missed the free throw. The Lady Hornets got the rebound but were unable to get the ball up the court in time to get off a shot.
On Thursday, South Point is at Chesapeake while Coal Grove hosts Portsmouth.
