CINCINNATI — Look out Fairland Lady Dragons. Your depth is showing.
Fairland got good contributions from its bench and beat the Thurgood Marshall Lady Cougars 62-49 Thursday in the Girl Powher Showcase “Braggin’ Rights Classic” at Winton Woods High School.
Fairland (8-0) was led by Emily Chapman with 20 points while Jackie Wagner came off the bench to score 12.
Coach Jon Buchanan praised his team, especially the work off the bench by Issy McKinney, Morgan Fridley and Wagner.
“Those three kids off the bench played well. We were concerned about our depth before the season, but the girls are starting to step up and contribute,” said Buchanan.
Thurgood Marshall (4-3) was led by Ohio University recruit Cierra Hooks with 23 points.
Chapman had 5 points in the first quarter and Fairland led 14-13.
Fridley and Chapman had 5 points while Taylar Wilson had 4 more and the Lady Dragons erupted to outscore the Lady Cougars 22-7 in the second quarter to lead 36-20 at the half.
“We were able to control the pace and keep the game up-tempo. With our bench playing well, we were able to wear them down,” said Buchanan.
Chapman had 6 points in the third quarter as the Lady Cougars cut the deficit to 47-33.
Allie Marshall scored 7 of her 9 points in the fourth quarter for Fairland.
