PEDRO — Things finally came together for the Coal Grove Hornets.
Coal Grove put together good shooting and defense in order to beat the Rock Hill Redmen 39-31 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Tuesday.
The Hornets were 15-of-32 from the field for 47 percent on offense and the defense held down the Rock Hill scoring.
“We finally shot the ball pretty well. We were patient and took good shots,” said Hornets’ coach Kevin Vanderhoof. “Our kids did a great job defensively.”
Aaron Music scored 15 points to lead the Hornets (7-13, 3-8). Jeb Jones added eight points and Jordan Case seven.
Rock Hill (2-16, 0-12) was led by Mason Darby with 12 points. Tyler Damron and Tim Adkins had five points each.
Music hit a 3-pointer and Case scored three points as Coal Grove took a 9-2 first quarter lead. Damron had the lone basket for Rock Hill.
Cory Borders and Jaylen McKenzie each hit 3-pointers in the second quarter and the lead was 17-9 at the half.
Music scored six points and Jones four as Coal Grove led by as many as 15 points in the third quarter. Darby scored five points as Rock Hill trailed 29-16.
Adkins, Damron and Darby all hit 3-pointers in the fourth quarter — Adkins and Darby scored five points each — as the Redmen got within five points.
But Music and Case scored four points each and Music and Jones both went 2-of-2 from the foul line to help preserve the win.
On Friday, Coal Grove visits Chesapeake and Rock Hill hosts Portsmouth.
