CHESAPEAKE — If Chesapeake used the Boyd County Lions as a measuring stick, the Panthers have moved up the yardstick.
Boyd County beat Chesapeake 64-33 on Dec. 9. Tuesday night the Panthers took the Lions to overtime before falling 64-61 as Boyd County’s Hunter Kenser scored 40 points.
Boyd County (22-6) got nine points from J.W. Jarrell and eight from Tanner Evans.
Chesapeake was led by Casey McComas and Cole Mills who scored 18 points each. The duo combined for eight 3-pointers — five by Mills.
Tanner Harr added 10 points for the Panthers (4-16).
Kenser scored eight points and Jarrell hit a pair of 3-pointers to give the Lions a 14-12 first quarter lead. Mills hit a pair of triples and Harr had a 3-pointer as he scored six points.
Chesapeake took a 30-27 halftime lead as McComas scored seven points and Mills hit two more 3-pointers. Kenser had six points and Evans five.
The Lions used 10 points by Kenser to regain the lead at 45-41 at the end of the third quarter. McComas had seven points including 4-of-4 at the foul line for the Panthers.
Mills hit a 3-pointer and scored six points as Chesapeake rallied to tie the game at 55. Kenser scored all 10 points in the quarter for the Lions.
McComas hit a trifect and Austin Jackson converted a three-point play in overtime but Kenser had six points — he was 4-of-4 at the line — and Taylor Smith hit a 3-pointer as the Lions outscored the Panthers 9-6.
The Panthers travel to Fairland on Friday.
