PEDRO — The Coal Grove Lady Hornets head reached one goal and were looking to get a second.
Mission accomplished.
The Lady Hornets achieved their second goal on Wednesday as they routed the Lucasville Valley Lady Indians 43-22 in the Division III sectional semifinals.
The Lady Hornets improved their record to 12-9, reaching their first goal of eclipsing last season’s nine-win total.
Winning the sectional game was goal No. 2.
“At the beginning of the season we sat down as a team and talked bout goals. We decided to set two team goals. This year we reached both those goals,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.
“We wanted to finish the regular season with more wins than last year and we wanted to get a sectional (tournament) win. We have accomplished both of those goals this year.”
Emily Compliment scored 14 points, Lauren Crum had nine pints while Destiny Dolen and Bailee McKnight added eight each to the balanced Coal Grove offense.
Coal Grove took an 11-4 first quarter lead as Dolen scored six points including 4-of-4 from the line.
The second quarter was an instant replay in terms of scoring as Coal Grove outscored Valley 11-4 to lead 22-8 at the half.
Compliment had four points and Kasey Murphy three more in the quarter.
Compliment and McKnight combined for nine points in the third quarter as the lead grew to 35-12.
Compliment had five more points in the fourth quarter and Crum added a 3-pointer.
“We played solid defense and held them to under 10 points in the first half. We had a few unforced turnovers that we will need to eliminate when we play Wheelersburg on Saturday,” said Roach.
Coal Grove plays Wheelersburg at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday in the sectional finals.
“As a team we moved the ball really well. Our free throw shooting was better than it has been the last couple of games. We are excited to get to play for a sectional championship,” said Roach.
In Wednesday’s first game, Portsmouth beat Portsmouth West 50-47.
May Williams had 18 points and Semajah Parker 17 to lead Portsmouth who will play Fairland at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the sectional finals.
