When the word “bowl” is mentioned relating to competition, it likely is in the scope of a sports setting. While fans pack these sports events to cheer or their team, victories and defeats are an obvious result.

However, many people don’t think about the term “bowl” regarding academics. But that was the case this week when high school quiz bowl teams from around Lawrence County competed in the Ironmaster Tournament at Ohio University Southern in Ironton.

The students who participate on their respective quiz bowl teams train just like athletes, preparing their mind for various competitions throughout the season.

This year’s winner was the team from South Point High School, who went undefeated in both individual and team matches all season. The team from St. Joseph High School took runner-up honors.

We congratulate South Point on a great season, and commend all the students and their teachers who worked hard throughout the year to ensure they were prepared each match.

Just like sports, events like quiz bowls are wonderful ways for our young people to push their mind, be a part of a team and enjoy competition against one another.

Quiz bowl teams have been a staple at school districts for decades, and we hope that this continues to be a tradition for many years to come.
