SOUTH POINT — This is what they call a “nailbitter.”
The South Point Pointers edged the Chesapeake Panthers 4-3 in an Ohio Valley Conference game that went down to the final inning on Tuesday.
South Point’s Jonathan Henline and Chesapeake’s Bryce Depriest locked up in a pitching battle.
Henline allowed four hits, struck out 11 and walked five in 6.2 innings. Douglas Shaffer got the final out for the save.
Depriest went the distance, struck out five and walked just one. Only two of the runs were earned.
South Point took a 1-0 lead in the first.
Tanner Hall walked, Brody Blackwell put down a sacrifice and Logan Wade had an RBI single.
Chesapeake tied the game in the third when Kelton Jones walked, stole second and scored on a hit by Evan Burcham.
The Pointers regained the lead with two runs in the fifth on singles by Drew Smith, Hall, Blackwell and Jonathan Henline and an error.
Chesapeake got within 3-2 in the top of the sixth.
Burcham and Dalton Nida walked and the run scored after two wild pitches.
South Point got what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the inning.
Chesapeake made a comeback big in the top of the seventh that fell short.
Bretton Martin walked, stole second and third and scored on a throwing error.
Jones then walked and stole second but Shaffer came on in relief and got a fly out to deep right field to end the game.
Hall, Smith and Shaffer each went 2-3 as the Pointers got nine hits.
On Wednesday, South Point hosts Gallipolis and Chesapeake entertains Rock Hill.
