SV students get money  for boat ramp project

A resolution for payment of the utility bill at the Ohio River Valley Juvenile Correctional Facility in Franklin Furnace died at the Lawrence County commission meeting this past Wednesday, which was conducted following the Symmes Valley High School softball game at the field.

Commissioner DeAnna Holliday, a longtime proponent for the jail move to the facility, motioned to approve the resolution, but received no further support.

“I’ve been a huge supporter of a move to the ORV from the very beginning,” Holliday said. “The lease expires May 7, and I want to use up every last effort that I have.”

Commission also approved giving 11 Symmes Valley High School students, along with the school’s government teacher Justin Berry, $3,000 to go towards cleaning up and renovating the Indian Guyan boat ramp in Union Township.

At the previous commission meeting, the students proposed the project to commission, which will include adding benches, picnic tables, trash cans and a few grills to the area, and asked for assistance.

Once the boat ramp is complete, the students said it would be much nicer for outdoor activities, such as picnicking, fishing or walking by the riverbank.

The $3,000 given for the project came out of a $15,000 fund appropriated for parks and recreation.

In other action, the commissioners:

• Approved and signed the weekly invoices and certificates as presented by the Auditor’s office.

• Received and filed the Dog Warden Report dated April 8, 2017.

• Approved three transfer funds.

• Received and filed the Grand Jury Report dated March 28, 2017.

• Approved appointments of Jeff Joseph, Daniel Heuchert, Rebekah Waugh, Jeff Depuy, Jeremy Higgenbothem, Melissa Butterworth and Jessyca Conaster to the Lawrence County Local Emergency Planning Commission.

• Approved Com-mission President Bill Pratt to sign the MCA Billing Agreement approved by Lawrence County Prosecuting Attorney Brigham Anderson, as requested by Buddy Fry, director of Lawrence County EMS.

• Received and filed the Prosecutor Opinion regarding the VFW Post 6878 Lease of Real Property in Proctorville.

• Received and filed the Prosecutor Opinion regarding Powers of Duties of the Director of the Lawrence County Department of Job and Family Services.

• Received and filed the Prosecutor Opinion regarding the Department of Job and Family Services in making personnel decisions.

• Received and filed/approved the correspondence requested by Lawrence County Department of Job and Family Services Director Terry Porter, regarding new hires Bridget Wade as IMW3 and Sheena Massie IMW3. Both will serve 120 day probationary periods.

The next commission meeting will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in commission chambers on the third floor of the courthouse.
