GALLIPOLIS — They say walks will haunt. If that’s the case, the Coal Grove Hornets spent part of Monday in a haunted house.
The Gallipolis Blue Devils took advantage of nine walked, two hit batsmen and two errors to beat the Hornets 5-2 in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
Gallipolis (10-5, 7-3) jumped in front 2-0 in the first inning.
John Stout was safe on an error, Brody Thomas was hit by a pitch and Dylan Smith and Jeremy Brumfield had RBI singles.
The Blue Devils got what proved to be the winning run in a three-run third.
Thomas walked and Smith was hit by a pitch but got picked off base. Brumfield singled and Bailey Walker to load the bases and then Josh Faro, Braden Simms and Stout all walked to force in runs.
Coal Grove (10-4, 7-3) got a run back in the fourth when Daniel Rutherford walked and Jeb Jones and Darin Bloomfield reached on an error.
The Hornets final run came in the sixth on a double by Rutherford and a single by Dylan Malone.
Brumfield pitched a complete game to get the win for Gallipolis. He allowed just three hits, struck out five, walked two and only one run was earned. He also went 3-4 at the plate with an RBI.
The teams meet again Tuesday at Coal Grove.
On Wednesday, Coal Grove hosts South Point and Gallipolis is at Chesapeake.
