Hornets win Ironton tourney

PINE GROVE — The Coal Grove Hornets must be part duck.
Despite wet and sloppy conditions, the Hornets posted a 339 team score led by Trevor Deere as Coal Grove won the Ironton Invitational Golf Tournament on Monday.
Deere was the medalist with a 76 that included three birdies. Jed Whitworth shot an 83, Alex Gillette 87 and Jakes Sites 93.
Deere and Whitworth were both named to the all-tournament team along with Logan Reed of Rock Hill, Clayton Thomas of Fairland, Kaden Thomas of Gallipolis and William Sturgill of Portsmouth.
Fairland was the runner-up with a 363 total that included Thomas’ 82. Mikhail Auxier and Reece Bellville each had an 87 and Connor Franklin 107.
Reed shot an 82 as Rock Hill had a 374 total to finish third. Jason Haywood shot an 84, Austin Riddle 96 and Chase Nelson 112.
Gallipolis was just one shot back in fourth place with a 375. Thomas shot a 77 to finish runner-up in the medalist battle. Reece Thomas had a 90, Cooper Davis 99 and Hobie Graham 109.
The Chesapeake Panthers had a 393 with Jacob Lemley posting an 84. Brandon Blair shot a 100, Austin Jackson 104 and Liam Thacker 105.
Host Ironton had a 447 with James Carter carding a 103 to lead the Fighting Tigers. Brayden Easterling had a 107, Drey Osborne 115 and Tyler Shelton a 122.
The South Point Pointers came in with a 485 led by Ryan Fetty with a 98. Hannah Hall shot a 123, Lucy Gannon 125 and Wyatt Thacker 139.
With only three players, Portsmouth did not have a team score. Sturgill shot an 83, Katy Pertuset 93 and Aiden Donges 115.
