Toward a clear purpose

At Tuesday’s meeting of South Point council, Mayor Jeff Gaskin said the village was getting close to moving on upgrades on its park.

A grant, from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, was originally intended for a scrapped spray park plan.

Pending approval,it is likely to be repurposed for the effort to make the village park more handicapped accessible, among other improvements.

In addition to the grant, the village is taking funds collected from tickets this summer, as part of a crackdown on speeding and running stop signs in the village.

Rather than use the money for other purposes, the mayor and council put the revenue from tickets aside with the specific purpose of funding the park improvements.

Combined with the grant funding, the village should be able to fund things, such as the addition of two swing sets and merry-go-rounds, which can accommodate a wheelchair.

These improvements will ensure that the park can be enjoyed by all children and residents in the village.

While no one likes paying a traffic ticket, in addition to ensuring public safety, it is good to see that the village, through this process, has worked toward transparency in where this money is going and, soon, residents will, hopefully, see real results from the effort.
