COAL GROVE — It’s time for the second season.
The Coal Grove Hornets will have an unscheduled home game this Friday thanks to qualifying for the Division VI Region 23 postseason football playoffs.
The Hornets (9-1) finished third in the region and will host the sixth-place Sarahsville Shenandoah Zeps (8-2) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in the first round.
This marks the Hornets’ 11th playoff appearance and first since 2012. The Hornets have also made it I 1981, 1983, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1996, 2009 and 2010.
Shenandoah is making its fourth playoff trip and first since 2003. They also qualified in 2001 and 2002.
Nelsonville-York (10-0) was first in the region followed by Chillicothe Southeastern (10-0). Fort Frye (9-1) was fourth, Northmor (8-2) fifth, Shenandoah, Steubenville Catholic seventh (7-3) and Shadyside (7-3) was eighth.
The rest of Friday’s Region 23 schedule has Shadyside at Nelsonville-York, Steubenville Catholic at Southeastern and Northmor at Fort Frye.
The winner of Coal Grove and Shenandoah will play the winner of Southeastern and Steubenville Catholic while the Nelsonville-York and Shadyside winner will play the Northmor and Fort Frye winner on Friday, Nov. 10.
The survivors of the semifinals will play in the regional championship game on Friday, Nov. 17.
The regional semifinals and finals will be played at neutral sites to be determined.
Coal Grove was the only area team to qualify for the postseason.
In Region 19 of Division V, Fairland finished ninth followed by Portsmouth, Ironton, Northridge, Chesapeake and Rock Hill in that order.
Symmes Valley was 13th in Region 27 of Division VII.
