There are five good reasons the Coal Grove Hornets won the Ohio Valley Conference football title this season and reached the Division VI Region 23 championship game.
The reasons are Kimo Baldwin, Sam Angelo, Jeb Jones, Darin Bloomfield and Nate Harmon.
All five Coal Grove players were named to the Ohio high school sports writers’ Division VI All-Ohio football team on Sunday.
The Symmes Valley Vikings landed two players on the team as seniors Brock Carpenter and Layken Gothard were honored.
Baldwin — a 6-foot 1, 230-pound senior — was the dominant player on defense from his linebacker spot and was named to the first team defense.
The Hornets’ leading tackler on the season was the Southeast District Defensive Player of the Year.
Another Hornets’ linebacker honored was 6-4, 205-pound senior Sam Angelo who was named to the third team defense. Angelo also had 17 catches for 295 yards and two touchdowns on offense during the regular season.
Named to the special mention list were 6-3, 210-pound senior two-way end Jeb Jones, 6-foot, 220-pound senior two-way lineman Darin Bloomfield and 6-2, 185-pound Nate Harmon who was the lone junior in the group.
Harmon ran 94 times for 711 yards and 10 touchdowns while completing 45-of-77 passes for 726 yards and nine interceptions. He had 1,437 total yards as a two-way threat at quarterback.
The 6-2, 210-pound Carpenter was named to the third team defense after racking up 141 total tackles to go with two interceptions and two quarterback sacks.
The 5-8, 160-pound Gothard was special mention after running 102 times for 902 yards and scoring 19 touchdowns.
