MAYSVILLE, Ky.  — When there’s trouble in a prison, the facility goes into a lockdown.
When the St. Joseph Flyers got in trouble on Friday, they went into a defensive lockdown.
Trailing by 11 points with five minutes to play, the Flyers rallied to tie the game and went on to win 58-57 in overtime over the St. Patrick Saints in the St. Patrick Catholic Classic.
“The kids went out and locked them down. We started making some plays,” said Flyers’ coach Rex Cooksey.
The Flyers won in the semifinals on Friday but lost a 55-53 heartbreaker to the Villa Madonna Blue Lightning in the championship game on Saturday.
“We played good basketball both days and got some experience that should help us,” said Cooksey.
“For 28 minutes, we couldn’t have played better basketball. But we made some mistakes and didn’t execute well. And Villa Madonna is a really good team and they had a really big offensive quarter.”
Joey McDavid scored 19 points to lead the Flyers despite sitting out half of the first half due to foul trouble. Clay Willis had 14 points and seven rebounds, Isaac Whaley seven assists and Chase Walters — who sat out half the game due to foul trouble — pulled down 12 rebounds.
The Flyers was down 28-14 at the half and then turned up the defense to limit the Saints to six points in the third quarter to trail 34-33.
Not only were the Flyers down 11 points with five minutes left, Walters fouled out with 3:17 left and losing 48-43.
Willis hit two foul shots with 2:50 to go that made it 48-45. Whaley scored with 22 seconds left and it was 50-47.
Willis hit two foul shots with 22 seconds left to get the Flyers within a point. The Saints hit two free throws to lead 54-51. The Flyers missed a 3-point attempt but got the rebound and McDavid hit a 3-pointer from the corner with no time left to tie the game and force overtime.
Trailing 57-56 with 24 seconds left in overtime, Whaley drove and was fouled with eight seconds left and hit both shots and it was 58-57.
St. Patrick (0-2) made 13 3-pointers in the game.
In Saturday’s title game, Zach Roach drained six 3-pointers to score 20 points and Walters had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Flyers.
McDavid had eight rebounds while Whaley had five assists and Willis four.
The Flyers led 11-9 after the first quarter and 22-18 at the half. They extended the lead to 42-32 after three quarter.
But Villa Madonna (1-2) cut the deficit to one with 1:05 left. The Flyers missed a shot and Villa Madonna scored and hit a foul shot to lead 55-53.
With time running out, the Flyers missed a shot and McDavid had a tip-in attempt at the buzzer that wouldn’t fall.
St. Joseph plays at Rock Hill on Tuesday.
