PROCTORVILLE — Tradition met tradition, so only one could win.

Two tradition-rich programs met in the Big E Classic on Saturday but it was the Fairland Dragons who showed their talents with an 81-30 win over the Waterford Wildcats.

“It was a good team effort. Everyone contributed in some way and we got to play everyone,” said Fairland coach Nathan Speed.

“Waterford has a good program and a lot of success. They usually make a deep tournament run. Our guys were excited about the challenge and they stepped up their game.”

Moving up to Division II this season after a state tournament run in Division III last year, Fairland (2-0) had five players in double figures in the win over the Division IV power Wildcats.

Kollin Van Horn had 17 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots for the Dragons and was named the Player of the Game.

Isaiah Howell had 15 points and two stelas, Ty Staten finished with 11 points and five assists while Luke Thomas and Keederick Cunningham scored 10 points each. Thomas had four assists and Cunningham a pair of steals. Ty Wilcoxon pulled down eight rebounds.

Howell reached a milestone during the game when he pulled down his 500th career rebound in the third quarter.

Van Horn scored seven points in the first quarter as Fairland jumped on top 18-2. He scored eight more in the second quarter and it was 39-13 at the half.

Staten got seven of his points in the third quarter as the lead ballooned to 61-23.

Fairland visits Ironton on Tuesday.
