PROCTROVILLE — The big men came up big.
Fairland’s 6-foot-8 Kollin Van Horn and 6-1 Keedrick Cunningham combined for 40 points as the Dragons beat the Coal Grove Hornets 83-50 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.
Fairland had 48 rebounds and 6-4 Isaiah Howell hauled down a game-high 15 while 6-2 Ty Wilcoxon came off the bench to grab seven.
The Dragons (13-3, 8-0) weren’t as deadly from the 3-point line like they were on Tuesday when they made 19-of-29, but they did manage 10-of-27. Van Horn was 4-of-6 from the 3-point line.
Coal Grove (8-4, 4-3) was led by Sam Angelo with 15 points. Cory Borders had 10 points and Aaron Music added nine.
“I was proud of our kids. We played really good basketball for three quarters. Fairland is just a really good team,” said Hornets’ coach Kevin Vanderhoof.
Fairland bolted to a 25-15 first quarter lead as Van Horn scored 10 points including a 3-pointer. Cunningham had six points and Ty Staten hit a 3-pointer and scored five of his seven points.
Borders had five points and Music, Angelo and Borders each hit a 3-pointer.
The Dragons were up 40-28 at the half as Van Horn hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points in the second quarter. Angelo had five points.
Fairland used a 12-0 run to end the third quarter and grab a 62-38 lead.
Cunningham scored nine points, Luke Thomas four and Wilcoxon hit a 3-pointer in the quarter. Angelo hit another 3-pointer and scored five points.
Matt Mondlak scored seven points and Clayton Thomas hit a pair of 3-pointers to lead the Dragons in the fourth quarter.
Evan Gannon drained a pair of 3-pointers and Nate Harmon was 4-of-4 from the foul line in the quarter for the Hornets.
Coal Grove plays at Chesapeake on Saturday at 3 p.m. and hosts Gallipolis on Tuesday. Fairland visits South Point on Tuesday.
