Hornets stun 5th-ranked Oak Hill in OT

COAL GROVE — It was upset week for the Coal Grove Hornets.
The Hornets started with a 61-41 upset of Gallipolis on Tuesday, avoided an upset by one-win Rock Hill on Friday, and then stunned previously unbeaten and fifth-ranked Oak Hill 58-54 in overtime on Saturday.
“Our guys just battled,” said Hornets’ coach Kevin Vanderhoof. “We got down eight or nine in the second half and our kids didn’t quit.”
Coal Grove trailed 38-31 after three quarters only to rally and tie the game at 48 to force overtime.
The Hornets (12-4) then outscored the Oaks 10-6 to pull off the upset.
Sam Angelo had 17 points and Aaron Music got 15 to lead the Hornets.
Oak Hill (16-1) got 18 points from Mitchell Hale and 15 from Mason Darby.
The game was tied 15-15 after the first quarter as Jeb Jones scored five points while Jordan Case and Angelo got four each.
Hale hit a 3-pointer and scored seven points while Darby added six points for the Oaks.
Oak Hill took a 25-21 halftime lead as Landon Carroll scored seven of his nine points in the second quarter including a 3-pointer.
The Oaks stretched the lead to 38-31 after three quarters as Chase Hammond and Hale scored four points each. Hale and Nolan Carroll both had 3-pointers in the quarter.
Music — scoreless in the first half — kept the Hornets close as he drained a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight points.
Angelo took over in the fourth quarter and scored seven points. Cory Borders hit a 25-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime.
Darby and Hale scored five points each to account for the Oaks’ offense.
In overtime, the Hornets got four points from Music. Jalen McKenzie and Music were clutch at the foul line as they each hit two free throws.
Darby had four points and Hammond was 2-for-2 at the line in the extra period.
On Tuesday, Coal Grove hosts Chesapeake.
