COAL GROVE — If anything, the Coal Grove Hornets like to make their games exciting.
The Hornets were coming off an upset of previously unbeaten Oak Hill on Saturday and found themselves in a battle with the upset-minded Chesapeake Panthers on Tuesday.
Coal Grove held just a one-point lead after three quarters but came up clutch in the fourth quarter in a 60-53 Ohio Valley Conference win.
Coal Grove (13-4, 8-3) had three players in double figures. Cordy Borders hit four 3-point goals and scored 14 points, Sam Angelo had 12 points including two 3-pointers and Jeb Jones scored 10 points. Jordan Case added nine.
Chesapeake (5-14, 3-9) got a game-high 22 points from Eli Archer while Cole Mills scored 16 points.
Case made a free throw and then hit a basket to put the Hornets up 42-38 to start the fourth quarter. Borders followed with a 3-pointer before Archer scored and it was 45-40.
Aaron Music converted a three-point play and Case hit a basket to open up a 50-41 lead.
Mills and Archer scored only to have Case and Alijah Roman hit baskets for a 54-45 lead.
Two foul shots by Roman had the lead at 57-49 when Archer score, but Roman made another foul shot.
Archer scored and it was 58-53 but Jones hit a pair of foul shots to seal the outcome.
Archer scored eight points in the first quarter to offset two 3-pointers by Borders and one by Angelo as the Panthers took a 16-13 lead.
But Chesapeake got just four points in the second quarter and the Hornets went on a 15-2 run to end the half and led 29-20.
Chesapeake got within 39-38 at the end of the third quarter.
Jones scored for a 39-32 lead but Mills, Kamren Harless and Archer all scored to close the quarter on a 6-0 run.
On Friday, Coal Grove visits Ironton and Chesapeake hosts Fairland.
