Dragons fight off Panthers

CHESAPEAKE — The Fairland Dragons are aware of their rivalry with the Chesapeake Panthers.
If they have forgotten, the Panthers reminded them on Friday.
Fairland won 71-35 last Saturday but had to battle the pesky Panthers on Friday as they pulled away to a 64-49 Ohio Valley Conference win.
Isaiah Howell and Kollin Van Horn came up big for the Dragons (18-3, 13-0). Howell had 21 points, seven rebounds and five steals while Van Horn socdred 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Luke Thomas hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points to go with three assists and Ty Staten had four assists in the win.
Chesapeake (5-15, 3-10) was led by senior Cole Mills with 15 points. Senior Jamey Mills hit three 3-pointers and scored nine points.
Chesapeake’s Tylan Hutchison had 10 rebounds, Eli Archer seven and Austin Jackson six.
Fairland opened the game with a 12-2 run with Howell scored five points. He finished with nine points in the quarter.
A basket by Archer and two foul shots by Kamren Harless got Chesapeake within 14-10. Howell made two foul shots and it was 16-10 at the end of the quarter.
Mills and Jackson hit basket as the Panthers cut the deficit to 18-16 in the second quarter.
Joel Lambiotte and Van Horn scored and Howell made a free throw for a 23-16 lead. Two foul shots by Hutchison left the Panthers down 25-22, but Staten scored and Thomas nailed a 3-pointer and it was 30-23 at the half.
Fairland came out fast to start the second half as Thomas, Howell and Keedrick Cunningham all hit baskets and State sank a free throw for a 36-23 lead.
Howell scored again, Thomas knocked down a triple and Van Horn made a basket to open up a 43-23 lead.
Cunningham’s basket to end the quarter put the lead at 47-31.
Mills drained a trifecta in the fourth quarter that left Fairland ahead 52-40, but the Panthers could get no closer.
Chesapeake hosts the Beast of Southeast on Saturday. The Dragons face Waverly at 1 p.m. while Panthers play Trimble at 5 p.m.
